When Patches came to Apollo’s, he was fighting Parvo. In order to save his life and make him adoptable, we provided him Parvo treatment, and got him neutered and vaccinated. He is currently in a long-term foster and will continue to need wellness check-ups until he is adopted. After seeing an emergency room vet at VCA West Coast the day we picked him up, then a consult with the same neurologist about a week later, an overnight with x-rays, multiple tests and lab work (with estimates of 7-9 k for surgery), he had a second consult and opinion today, and all vets agree that due to his physiology and long back, too
After seeing an emergency room vet at VCA West Coast the day we picked him up, then a consult with the same neurologist about a week later, an overnight with x-rays, multiple tests and lab work (with estimates of 7-9 k for surgery), he had a second consult and opinion today, and all vets agree that due to his physiology and long back, too long for his breed and make-up (likely due to poor breeding practices), Mellow indeed had a slipped disc back in June which now has affected multiple vertebrae as he injured himself dragging himself around at his former home.
The vets also agree that because of the length of time from injury to getting help, surgery is not a good option for him. The recuperation alone would set him back and be a hard recovery for him.
We have decided instead to do the following (and feel free to add your insight if you have experience in this in the comments!): he is receiving acupuncture a few times a week, laser therapy and then water therapy when he is ready - all to try and alleviate discomfort, wake-up the nerves that have been languishing, and build muscle mass. We also have fitted him for a back brace and measured him for wheels so that he can be as mobile as possible. Any help towards his care would be greatly appreciated!
